The key to getting a flat stomach is not only paying attention to your diet, but also having a regular exercise routine. Noom’s weight loss expert, Andi, has put together a series of five exercises that can help you burn fat and tone this trouble area of the body.

The first exercise on the list is the classic plank. Get into a traditional plank position by touching your forearms to the floor and keeping your hips and shoulders straight and parallel to the ground. This is one of the most effective belly-fat burners and core strength builders you can do. Hold this pose for ten full breaths and then rest. Repeat ten times to complete this workout.

Another great way to work your abs and reduce belly fat is to perform a set of plank swivels. Begin in a traditional plank position, and then, using your core muscles, lift your hips toward the floor on the right side of your body. Slowly bring your hips back to center and then repeat on the left side of your body. Do ten reps of each side to complete this workout.

For an added challenge, try adding some plyometric movements to your core workouts. This is an exercise that can be done in a gym, but it also can be done at home with a pair of dumbbells in your hands. Begin by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart. Assume a lunge, alternating the starting foot with each repetition. As you begin to feel stronger, add some jumps, either hopping on one leg or a more advanced version of the burpee, incorporating a lunge with a jump and a crunch.

Lastly, finish your workout with a set of bicycle crunches to target the lower abdominal region. Lie on the floor with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle with your hands behind your head. Engage your core, drawing your lower rib toward your pelvis, and lift your upper body from the floor, bringing your right elbow to your left knee. Slowly return to the starting position, alternating sides as you do this for the targeted number of reps.

Spot reduction isn’t a viable approach to burning belly fat, but working your entire core can help to reduce this common problem area. These exercises will work to tone your core and also burn fat across the entire body, helping you achieve a slimmer and more defined silhouette.
